Being Properly Equipped For Baseball
Benito Santiago was once asked; "When do you know when it's time to leave baseball? He responded by saying "when the kid in me is not having fun anymore, then it's time for me to retire". Where else could you play a kids sport as a grown man and get paid handsomely for it. When the professional playing days come to an end you can still find other competitive leagues available to continue playing for fun.
Whether you are a skilled veteran or a tee ball kid just starting out, being properly equipped for baseball is a must. For players like Sammy Sosa who when growing up in Puerto Rico used sticks as bats and milk cartons for gloves, one of the luxuries we have in the good ole USA is being able to turn on a computer and click a button and a week later your gear is delivered to your front door. At Dick's Sporting Goods being properly equipped for baseball is what they strive to accomplish with the vast array of products they offer.

From the very first day of Little League being properly equipped for baseball is a rule. When the umpire asks; "Does everyone have the proper protective equipment? Does every player have a hat? Are the baseball helmets free of cracks? Do the baseball bats have any cracks or excessive dents? Does the catcher have the proper throat protection piece for the catcher's mask? Is anyone wearing metal spiked cleats? Being properly equipped for baseball has its place.
Just as the kids need to be checked for proper gear it's also important for the coaches to take inventory in being properly equipped for baseball. Are your shoes or cleats comfortable for base coaching and standing around for 6 innings? Does your jersey top and baseball pants fit? How about your baseball cap, does it fit as well? Do you have sunglasses to cut the glare during those afternoon games? Being properly equipped for baseball as a coach also means do you have a scorebook to keep track of the individual or team statistics? Do you have a pitch count device to track number of pitches thrown to protect your pitchers arm? These are just some of the few of many items that are needed to help make the coaching job a bit more organized.

For those of you who run the league or groom the fields before the games, being properly equipped for baseball is also important. Do you have a drag mat to drag the playing field and to keep it free of pebbles and debris? Do you have a rake to groom the pitchers mound and base path areas? Do you have the bases and home plate to complete the infield? Do you have enough chalk to put in the chalk machine to stripe the playing field? There is nothing more depressing as a player than to show up with a shoddy infield with ruts and holes in the infield and base paths, or to have faded lines to try and see if a ball was hit fair or not.
A key to being properly equipped for baseball is to also have the right practice gear and equipment accessories. Do you have enough baseballs to conduct your offensive and defensive drills? Do you have space in your yard for a batting cage with the right frame & netting? Are you prepared to protect yourself when pitching batting practice with a pitching protective screen? Do you plan on using a pitching machine for multiple hitting drills? If so, do you have the lite flite softy balls or the dimpled yellow balls to run through your pitching machine?
When conducting batting practice do you have a backdrop with a strike zone so the pitchers can pitch into it and have the baseballs caught and stored in one location, so you don't have to chase them or wear your catcher out. Do you need a portable pitching mound or is one provided for you?
Being properly equipped for baseball practice means you need to have some hitting tees available for hitting repetitions and to work on the players form and swing. Working on the timing of the swing and step and staying loaded and back for the pitch can be worked on over and over with the soft toss machine that helps develop the batters rhythm and timing of his or her swing.
For those of you who play softball, fast pitch or slow, your equipment needs are also met at Dick's Sporting Goods. Softball bats & gloves, rubber cleats or plastic cleats in lieu of metal spikes are a must. Sliding pads and batting gloves are needed as well. Also, don't forget your bat bag to carry all your gear.
